• 1984 for string quartet (2018 February duration 16‘)
The book 1984(Nineteen Eighty-Four), was written by George Orwell, which describes a dystopian society. He wrote this book twenty years before the year 1984 to predict the dark future. The novel is set in Airstrip One, whose residents are victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. A mysterious leader is known as Big Brother, who enjoys an intense cult of personality, ostensibly oversees the tyranny. The people, who live there, can’t have their own thoughts and they can’t fall in love freely just like the main character Winston can’t expose the love that he and Julia have. I wrote this piece to remind people the fact that there are still people suffering from this kind of thought-tyranny around the world. The three movements are like three chapters that follow the story. I didn’t name every movement, but you can guess what they are telling about.

• broken silk strings for L'histoire septet new music ensemble 2017
This piece is written for L’historie septet which is a small chamber ensemble with violin, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, double bass, and one percussion. Igor Stravinsky introduced this instrumentation in his composition L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale).
The piece is about an ancient Chinese story, which talks about two people who are confidants in music. One of them, Boya, plays the Qin, a seven-stringed Chinese instrument. The other is Ziqi, his best friend, who understands his playing and what he means to express. Wen Ziqi dies, Boya thinks there is no one who can understand his music; he breaks his valuable Qin and never plays again. Therefore, Boya broke his valuable Qin and never played the Qin again for the rest of his life. I wrote this piece to convey the pure friendship between them.

I. sapphire II. opal III. amethyst IV. ruby
This piece is dedicated to the pianist Ms. Ke Coco Chen. I choose four beautiful gemstones, which are the sapphire, the opal, the amethyst, and the ruby. I was attracted by their colors and textures. The sapphire typically exists in blue and the opal can be many colors. Opal shows a variable interplay of internal colors. The amethyst is a purple gemstone. The word ruby comes from ruber, Latin for red.

Text
花非花
霧非霧
夜半來
天明去
來如春夢幾多時
去似朝云無覓處
huā fēi huā
wù fēi wù
yè bàn lái
tiān míng qù
lái rú chūn mèng jǐ duō shí
qù sì zhāo yún wú mì chù
The bloom is not a bloom,
The mist, not mist.
At midnight she comes,
And goes again at dawn.
She comes like a spring dream - how long will she stay?
She goes like the morning cloud, without a trace.
